Lettered Farmall tractor tranmissions are the simple, unsynchronized "sliding gear" type - they're not intended to be shifted while in motion. Normal practice is to start and stay in a gear - only changing gears after coming to a complete stop. However it is possible to up/down shift without grinding while in motion. It just takes the right conditions and a bit of practice. Right conditions are little or no dragging load, and level or downhill travel - so the tractor will coast a few feet while changing gears. With the tractor in motion, the procedure is like this: 1) Step on clutch and shift to neutral. 2) Release clutch and quickly adjust throttle so motor is running at the RPM it will require when in the new gear (this is where the practice comes in!). 3) Now depress clutch and select the new gear. If you do it right the shift occur with no gear clash whatsoever (and if the RPM's are wrong, you'll know it IMMEDIATELY!) 4) Finally release the clutch and tractor on... Once you master the above, try shifting without using the clutch. It takes skillful use of the governor handle, but it works great. Helps if you've ever driven a truck with a 10 speed "roadranger" or similar transmission. The procedure is the same except you're using hand throttle instead of an accelerator pedal to regulate engine speed. Have fun!!

I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
