A major part of this is how worn your tranny is, but they are right. A tractor transmission isn't built to on the fly shifting. If the tranny has some wear, you can do it. On a five speed, it is good to get the tractor rolling by starting out in forth, then shifting to fifth. But this takes a little practice with the clutch and throttle. If the engine is healthy, it doesn't hurt to begin in road gear and slip your clutch to start out. One point when doing this is to not throttle up (or down) until the engine has smoothed out.
