As you know, there is no machined surface to get a good, accurate measurement to, but maybe this will help. From the pulley flange (as cast) to the horizontal rib below the pointer when the timing mark is horizontal (also as cast) measures 2.446". The pulley is supposed to be on as far as it will go. Are you sure you have the right seal correctly installed? Is the thrust bearing in good shape?

I just brought this engine into the shop this afternoon...it's a 1948, but they should all be the same.
