Thanks MNGB! I set the timing and set the valve lash today. If it were not for the wine of the hydraulic pumping you wouldn't be able to tell the engine was running (at idle) from the other side of the garage.
I had to use brake clean and a pick, but I got some residue out of the ring where the gasket goes. Oil doesn't pour out, but it does permeate through. I think that's going to be as good as its going to get.
