The use of shims/spacers and the like to reposition a gear on a shaft is OK but an indication that the manufacturer was sloppy, even to the point of putting a spacer in the "kit" that doesn't work. I cannot imagine putting spacers in the input shaft and still having it function. Using shims to align the new gear is probably necessary. My take is that it will take some time to get it right, as it may take a shim on both sides of the new CM gear. Jim
