The solenoid is your switch to your starter. There is a little plunger in there. When you turn the key & push the button, the solenoid is energized, the plunger goes up, & it makes the contact between the two big posts on the solenoid. You should have power coming in on one of the big post on the solenoid, and the other side should go to the starter. As soon as you stop pushing your starter button, the solenoid de-energizes, the plunger drops, and the starter stops turning. I know you said that there were three big wires on one side, but it sounds like you have the whole system energized off the one post of the solenoid. When you push the starter button, the plunger goes up, makes contact, & shorts the whole system. That is why your radio & fan stop. If that doesn't take care of the problem, then you do have a problem. Good luck.
