If you have the big nut on the steering gear good and tight(The one that holds the worm gear in) and you still have back and forth play in the steering shaft when you turn the steering wheel, it's likely the ball bearing on the worm gear is worn. That bearing is a thrust bearing and holds the shaft from moving back and forth. It's cheap and fairly easy to replace. You have to take the steering shaft loose at the universal joint and remove the big retainer nut plug on the front of the steering gear. You can then just turn the steering shaft and the worm gear with bearing and shaft will come out.
