I had the same problem with my 1953 super w6.Turned out to be rust in fuel tank.Even when I ran the tank dry and put new fuel it sputtered and would sometimes stop completely.If I wasn't working it to hard it would be ok but as soon as I was bouncing around it would start popping and missimg (chunks of rust were breaking from tank walls).It eventually quit running bad when most of the rust had been washed away I guess.I was told to steam clean the tank but I didnt yet.Also when it quit running occassionly, I would close fuel cock and remove sediment bowl, stick rubber hose up into tank ,open fuel cock and blow (messy but works)Hope yours is an easy fix.
