So my 460D up and died when I just got it started. Sounded like something bound, then bang, she let go and the engine died. Now it cranks over but won't start, doesn't even smoke when cranking.
I have removed the timing cover on the injector pump, the pump IS turning. I removed several injector lines from the injectors, it is spitting fuel here. I'm not exactly sure how much fuel it should be spitting or spraying, but it is getting some, I'm thinking its enough. Next thing I wanted to check was timing, I had a hard time finding the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley, but once I did, I went over to the injector pump to see if the lines lined up in the timing window. They do NOT! So I turned the engine over by hand until the lines in the injector pump did line up, this took a quarter turn of the crankshaft. once the injector pump lines were lined up, I took a close look at the crankshaft pulley looking for marks. Nothing there. It seems the engine and fuel injector pump are way out of time, is this possible?? I then took the cover off of the front of the engine in front of the injector pump. I could see the crankshaft gear and the drive gear for the injector pump meshing just fine, no stripped gears.
So, is it possible for this engine and injector pump to be this far out of time? If so, how did it happen? I would think the gears in front of the engine would have had to either strip or jump, I see no signs of that having happened. I also verified that the cam was turning by removing the valve cover and watching all the valves open and close.
Also, it still stumps me that it isn't smoking when being turned over, even if out of time, shouldn't it still smoke some??
I'm pretty stumped here, but not ready to give up. Any additional thoughts or help on what to check next???
