Ask for the old parts. Then count the teeth to see if they are the same gears. Then the gasket as already said could be different thickness. Like if he is one of those silicone mechanics for gaskets. That would make it to tight. If the old gear was worn enough to need replaced the one it meshes with might be worn causing the noise. I would guess he replaced the drive in the front of the transmission going into the back of the pressure plate rather than the pump gear. If so then he should have changed the seal and bearing in there too. Could have missed one of the o-rings between the pump and housing or it fell out during installation. Lots of food for thought.
