Thanks for all the help guys. I'm just posting this in case someone else has the same question.
I just got off the phone with Hastings regarding part no 2C7696. They told me the top (shiny) ring can be installed either way while the bottom ring (black) should be installed "dot up, inside bevel DOWN". Now, I'm still a little weirded out by the fact that mine have an "R" and no dots, but I have to go with what the Hastings rep told me. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
