The 60s autos got 12 volts during cranking and ran off of 5 to 7 volts. This was accomplished with the bypass circuit from the ignition switch that went around the 1.4 to 1.65 ohm resistor when the switch was in the crank position. Once the engine cranked, the switch was released to the on position and at that point the ignition voltage is fed through the resistor to achieve the drop in voltage. This provided ample voltage to crank even from a weak battery yet allowed the vehicle to run on reduced voltage. The external resistor dissipates heat and thus reduces the heat that would be in a coil with an internal resistor. I question if the placement of the resistor inside the coil on later versions were not a compromise for the sake of cost reduction.
