Not to muddy the water on all the fine advice, but I have an experience to share. Few years ago, I hooked up a GM alternator to a surplus 5hp tiller motor, to provide for a portable jump starter, and for charging batteries. I used a known good alternator, but it wouldn't work. 'Bout drove me crazy - checked everything - inside and out of the alternator. Finally gunned the engine while it was running, and it took to charging immediately. Moral - the alternator needs to be turned up a bit in speed to start generating electricity. Have any of those of you who have done 12v conversions on the old slow running tractors had this problem? I'd put a larger pulley on the engine shaft, but the old one is frozen fast!
