Cowman, I'm gonna stick my neck out on this one because although I give Seminar Workshops on Wico C and X Mags at Natl John Deere shows, IM NOT FAMILIAR WITH IHC MAGS, but believe this to still be true in theory BUT NO WARRANTY
Yep, by definition Lag Angle is how much the impulse start timing Lags the advanced run timing. The way it works is at very slow cranking/starting RPM little dogs are extended outwards so they wind up the impulse spring and it trips to fire at TDC (if so adjusted). But over 250 RPM or so centrifugal force keeps them inside so theres no wind up and trip so the timing depends on the relationship of the drive cup to when the points open, and if the drive cup and the mag is configured and fine adjusted for say 25 BTDC, thats when she fires once the impulse is no longer working......
If it runs at 25 BTDC (function of drive cup and mags points geometry and adjustemt) but you want it to start at TDC THEN YOU ADJUST THE LAG ANGLE FOR 25 DEGREES WELL DUHHHHHHHHHH
On the Wico Mags the drive cups can be selected for maybe a 20 or 25 or 30 run timing and then you simply adjust the lag angle to match the drive cup used. Even if the drive cup is a fixed unit (IHC ???) the lag angle still can use some fine tuning adjustment due to points gap and cam lobe wear and slop and wear in the impulse assembly
NO WARRANTY, THATS SORT OF HOW WICO MAGS DO IT and why the lag angle can be fine tuned and adjusted so she starts right at TDC then runs maybe 25 BTDC........
