Tapered roller bearings cannot be run with "as much as I could" preload. Tyhey will be toast in short order. If loose after tightening, there is a bearing out. Running it will destroy the spindle and thus the lower bolster. Not good!!. Take it apart and find the real issue. It should have preload as follows. With the other tire on a 4X4 to lift the wheel that is loose, replace bearings and seals as needed. Pack the bearings with wheel bearing grease. Assemble. Tighten the spindle nut till the wheel just starts to feel some drag as it is turned by hand. Whack the casting of the wheel with a wooden 2X4 to seat the bearings. Check the spin again if loose retighten the nut till it will only spin on its own about one turn after a good hand spin. Loosen the nut one castle and pin it there. Jim
