Fuel Pump on a W-9 Gas?

Restoring a 49 W-9 gas. Owners and service manual both show a fuel pump on the lower left side of the engine block. My tractor just has a plate bolted to this boss and I have never seen a W-9 with a fuel pump. Given that the tank is mounted much higher than the carb, why did they have a pump and do I need to consider finding one. The tractor ran just fine without. Thanks for all of the help on this board.
