Couple of things you might check/try: First, check the voltage between the resistor and your coil to see if the resistor is doing the job. You can do this both with the tractor running and stopped. When stopped, you should see the full battery voltage between the coil and resistor when the points are open, and about half when the points are closed. If you see half the voltage with the points open, you've probably got a bad condenser, although a short somewhere in the distributor is also possible. When the tractor is running, you should see a fluctuating voltage alternating around maybe 8 volts between the coil and resistor. Since half the voltage drop is supposed to take place across the resistor, it should be as hot as the coil, or something is probably wrong with it. If you're more into the plug-in-new-parts-until-it-works school, try a new condenser or two - these things don't seem to be as reliable as they once were, and not many people claim to know how to check them, so trying more than one isn't a bad idea. They do have the advantage of being relatively cheap. Hope this helps, and good luck. My bet is you've got a bad condenser from your description.

Timing Your Magneto Ignition Tractor - by Chris Pratt. If you have done major engine work or restored your tractor, chances are you removed the magneto and spark plug wires and eventually reached the point where you had to put it all back together and make it run. On our first cosmetic restoration, not having a manual, we carefully marked the wires, taped the magneto in the position it came off, and were careful not to turn the engine over while we had these components off. We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t
