I don't know the specifics, but the Diesel engine development at that time was being consolidated in the Construction Equipment Division for the U.S. products. Farm Tractor still had control over their gas engines, I think Truck had control over their Diesels. IH had been trying for some time to ditch the start on gas Diesels, focusing on converting the four cylinder gas blocks to full Diesels similar to what IH was producing in Britain. Why the engines were successful in Britain I don't know, but the six cylinder development was also happening since 1945, and may have been just what worked. I'd love to know more myself.
