I had two International 240's years back and I 'tink ' the hydraulic fluid is checked by turning out a small cap screw, hex head bolt or machine screw (they may have been changed over the years by folks) that is located on the left side of the transfer case below the left foot rest. I'm sure it is the same with your F-240 as that is my check point for F & U 460's and my F-340's. Fill the system until fluid begins to run from this opening. Yup, you are correct on the locale for filling engine oil. An [/i]IH Operator's Manual and Maintenance Manual[i] can be a great help.
