Your statement "when ever I take off with it" seems to indicate that it was working like an automatic. If so it was out of adjustment and it was slipping (front TA clutch). It should only work when the lever is pulled back quickly. and be in direct drive when the Lever is moved forward quickly. Actually the quicker it is moved the better for its life span. If the TA front clutch slips it eventually will not go into direct drive, and will stay in free wheeling (low range) all the time. Can you explain more about your circumstances. Jim
