Most likely your starter has gone through a rebuilders shop. Often all the tags are removed when they are rebuilt because the tag is very specific as to what the starter is but the same case may be used on dozens of different starters. Without the tag the rebuilder will just use the correct case to build the starter they want and then just stamp the number on them. Most rebuilts today don't even get the number stamped into the case. They just slap a paper tag on the starter to identify it. That can cause some problems when they come in for repair.
A lot of the smaller, newer Delco starters (656 and newer) do not have the tag on them. They just have a number stamped into the case. If they have been rebuilt they often have the wrong numbers on them. When I repair them I stamp the correct numbers on the case. That makes it a bit easier for me is I should have to repair them again in the future.
