This is a long post. Please bear with me.
Now that I have my M running again with it's new magneto (static timed by the book), I'm trying to troubleshoot the charging system, and I'm stuck at step #1.
When the M starts up, the needle start wiggling all over the place. At first, it will start wiggling over to the + side intermittingly to 5 then 10. Give it more gas, then it really starts wiggling back and forth from + to - sometimes going all the way to 20 on both sides of zero. This happens regardless where the 4 pos. switch is pointed at. Is this normal? The ammeter never behaved like this when the M still had it's dist. ignition.
Would too much retard, or too much advance in the magneto influence any of this?
BTW, I still don't have lights regardless of where the 4 pos. switch is pointed at. Shouldn't I have lights with the M running or not running? It did before when it still had it's dist. ignition with the same cut out. The lights and switch do have good ground BTW.
This is all freaking me out, and I'm just about to go buy another generator, cutout, ammeter, and 4 pos. switch, and start all over. Some of that 64 Year old stuff probably needs to be replaced anyway.
Oh one more thing regarding the cutout. I tried testing it by grounding the 'bat' terminal of the cutout and running a hot wire from the - side of the battery to the'gen' terminal of the cut to see if the points would close, and they remained open. Did I perform that test correctly? Also, with the cover off, I ran the the motor and got faint blue sparks between the points Is that normal? Also, when I polorized the gen., I got no spraks when I touch the "bat' and 'gen' terminals together. That don't sound right either, RIGHT?
Any thoughts on this? What say ye?
