If the alligator was clipped to the grounded battery terminal, and the light came on when you touched the generator housing. the generator is not grounded. That test would indicate that the generator and ground were not connected. If the battery ground cable is attached to the starter motor, and the motor was not grounded to the engine, the starter would work correctly, but nothing else, no lights and no charge, and no spark to the polarizing. Use a jumper cable and jump from the battery ground terminal to a frame shiny place, then test things again. Starter motors have had bad grounds to the engine. Let us know. Jim
