Farmall H Distributor Spark Advance

Can anyone give me any information on how the spark advance mechanism works on the distributor for a Farmall H? I static timed the engine to TDC, but when I start the engine and look at it with a timing light, it is always advanced by about 20 to 35 degrees, and seems to run and accelerate well. If I set the timing to TDC with a timing light, it starts hard and runs poorly. Shouldn't the spark only advance during acceleration?
