If it's trying to engage and just "grinding" on the starter ring, take it to your local auto-electric place and have 12 V. field windings installed. Windings will run about $75 above any other service they may have to do. Even if the starter drive is bad, do the 12V winding... it will save you future trouble. My 240U was doing that and the auto-electric guy said what happens in a lot of cases, is the starter spins up to speed too quickly and can't engage. may work fine at times, and may never cause a problem, but I can tell you mine starts quicker than it ever did, even before when the starter engaged like it should. On mine the drive also had to be replaced and new bushings and brushes... ran about $180 or $190, but I have a "like new" starter and it's never started so good.
