battery drains continue on M

I have had generator and new voltage reg rebuilt. They were in bad shape. this was done and tested before me by professional. No loose wires. Electric test shows no drain from the on/off switch. If cables are left hooked up battery drains, but if ground is disconnected, I reattached one week and 20 degree temps later and she fired right up throwing the bad battery theory. what next? disconnect the lights? this bad battery was ongoing prior to rebuild of generator.
