All the tips mentioned are good, here's another; you say it's almost out of gas? now is the time to remove the sediment bowl assembly from the tank and clean everything. mine had a long blade of straw or something sticking in the valve seat causing it to not seal well. it also had a bunch of stuff in the sediment bowl inlet that you couldn't see or clean without taking the assembly off the tank.
