Yes you need to push down on the shift lever at least some to work the pin out. The pin will likely have grooves worn in it and if you just drive on it you may bust the housing. The little pin above just holds spring pressure on the cup. You should be able to push the lever down through the cup a little ways, 1/8 inch or so. The pins will come out with a little careful work. Check the end of the shifter lever when you get it out, it may need to be built up a little. On the way back, grease the inside of the cup where it rides on the top of the housing.
