When working with a simple open center system on an 806, all you have to worry about is if you have a open center valve on the log spliter. If it was closed center, the spool on your tractor would detent when the spool on the log splitter wasn't in use, or be blowing the relief valve and over heating the hydraulic system. More than likely your running another spool on the log splitter and leaving the spool on the tractor locked in the detent poistion, by tying it down, or raising the detent preasure. Either way, the symptoms you described earlier indicate you were using the right valve on the splitter. Glad we could help you. And Happy holidays.
