Are you sure the wires are in order. #1 wire is at the 1oclock position on the cap then next is #3 then #4 then#2 in clockwise rotation. There is no way to advance spark without moving gears that turn the rotor then it will not start very well. That mag fires on TDC then when engine runs if goes to 32 or so deg advance and thats the way they work. Check your wires and have you done a compression checkare the valves set correct at 14 thous playing with the mag will not fix your problem it either fires or not at all.
