I see no problem with making your own studs out of a bolt, cut the head off and use a jam nut to tighten against the fan. You don't need grade 8, 5 or 2 will work fine. I am with you on the spring solution, why spend $6 on one when you can get them for 75 cents? It is not high tech or an extreme duty spring.
