Well there is an art to properly shimming that ring and pinion so they do not whine excessively.
That said most of those older spur gear tranny's do whine some. I thought I would be smart and change my tranny oil in my ole Farmall h. The stuff that was in there looked like cake batter. Drained that out and threw it away. Put 90 weight mineral in there and now it whines louder than it did before. Kinda wish I would have left that cake batter stuff in there.
Anyway when time and funds allow: I am going to put 85W140 in there (GL-1 thru GL-4 grade which can be obtained from NAPA). I do not want any of the current GL-5 grade stuff that is sold in most discount locations. GL-5 has additives that can eat brass bushings. I do not know if my ole H has any brass in the tranny but I do know some of my other tractors do have brass in them. No sense risking me grabbing wrong bottle.
Anyway 85W140 may quite it down a tad. Just do not expect miracles.
