Diana-
You aren't going to get much help from my answer: "been there, done that" and it's not worth buying the equipment even though you have been having a problem. You will be way ahead in $$, time, aggravation to buy the hay, hire it done, etc. or some other arrangement. Also, I know that the small, old-time square bales are on the way out but I still think it would be worth it to try to find a source.
My $.02 based on my experience.
