Well, now you can use fine sand paper, emery cloth or a file. Can't get more confusing than that can it. A riffle file is what you are supposed to use according to the good book but not too many even know what that is let alone have one. Any fine paper or cloth will work. You just have to get it clean again after you polish them as that is what causes them to burn , not the grit embeded in the points. The spring adjusts the voltage setting so if it works ok after you rap it I would guess it is close to correct but only a volt meter will tell you for sure.
