Thanks for your suggestions and explanation of how this box works (and fails). My steering is overall very tight, the only play being in about a 1/8" output shaft up and down (axial) motion. But the lower seal is not leaking and the steering shaft end ball bearing was in good shape so I'll leave it alone for now. There was a little water in with the very black and thick oil (probably original). I reinstalled the steering shaft last night with a new top seal. We'll see if everything holds. By the way, the transmission oil was also very black and thick. The previous owner of 35 years said he had never changed it. Sad how people neglect cheap and easy maintenance and cause problems down the line.
Super A is like the 100 with a single shaft. I will use your tape drip edge idea.
