t-bone, using a pick-up to haul and load/unload round bale's is very popular up here, a 3/4 or 1 ton is plenty strong to handle one or two round bales with no beefing up the suspension. take my word for it it works. Sure dragging a bale with a chain works, for a few feet until the bale starts to rip apart under its own weight. Its just like throwing money on the ground and stepping on it, WASTE. A quick fix that dosen't fix the problem. Good money went into making those bale's, if it was me I would want the most return on that investment. The flat deck allows for longer wider bales, yes you can get a pick-up truck bale lifts that work with a stock pick-up box, either way the choice is up to you. look into it Moving a bale is realy easy with a little imagination and a few bits of metal. Ive got an idea for a cheap trailer type bale mover, a few actualy, you can move them with a small pick up. Be safe and have fun with it, cause its not a problem its an adventure. An adventure in being creative and resourceful, And thats what its all about.
