Hi JC, I had thought about doing as you suggested, but... as the land has been in the CRP program for 10 years with a brome grass/clover and now weeds here and there mix, I know it's going to take a lot of work to get the soil back in condition. He and I had talked last fall about his working the land, and I brought up the issue of contracting for more than one year with him since so much work is going to have to go into the soil. I had figured it wouldn't be fair to have him do all of the preparing (lime and such)and then have me change my mind maybe the next year and want to do something else with it. I know he has a small baler, because he does straw bales, so would this mean he has the same equipment that would work for hay? I have no idea how to figure how many small bales per acre and if he could do this, I wouldn't want an over abundance since I'd have nowhere to store more than 300, although I could use more than that! Good years I could probably get 3 cuttings. Some farmers push for 4, but I personally don't think that's fair to the stand and can harm it for future cuttings. I'm not sure what the pay/trade scale is for having an arrangement like this, and am afraid I'm going to get ripped off out of ignornace. As it is now, I receive 85.00 an acre from the CRP. I THOUGHT my goal would be to get that much per acre one way or another, but maybe I'm asking too much, or too little. (?) I don't know what to expect in what I would have to put up financially for the soil prep and such. 50/50? Then 50% of the income? After hashing out with myself over this for a while, it drew me closer to the conclusion to do it myself, then I wouldn't get ripped off by anyone. I have to say, of the farmers around here, I would say this man is one of the least likely to rip me. But, sometimes taking advantage can be irresistable, you know? Technically, I have until August or October, I think, to make up my mind what to do about all of this. Actually, that's not much time! I appreciate the ideas presented on this board giving me many options. The pro's and con's of each being listed make it much easier to make a wise choice. You guys are great! Thanks! Diana H
