Whether the fork slides on the shift rail depends upon which style rail in in your tractor. You could have a rail with one clip between the fork and the rear of the housing. If it is a flat clip the rail will move some in the housing and they fork is also allowed to move. The latest style will have two wire type retainers, one on each side of the fork. The fork does not move on the rail.
The shift rail can be replaced from the rear by removing the cover or bracket above the PTO. The rail will pass over the left side of the differential.
