Had the same problems with my C that I inherited from my dad. Even with new battery it still didn't crank. I removed starter, took it apart and cleaned armature where brushes contact well, oiled drive and bushings, replaced battery cables as well as cleaning contacts in switch. Reinstalled starter and it worked as new. I might add I used cheap battery cables (6 guage). I wouldn't recommend this and would go with the largest cable you can find as it will pay off. Any voltage drop due to dirty connection anywhere in this circuit will usually cause starter to either not crank or crank very slowly. I did use a 625 CCA 6 volt battery available at farm supply store locally. I recommend bench running starter prior to assembling to test. If it won't run on bench it won't crank the tractor.
