About losing the fluid through that gap between the seal and shaft it doesn't take much of one to displace a lot of hydraulic fluid when it is under significant pressure which it mostly likely is in the pump. When the engine driven pump is working (engine on) the fluid has to go somewhere and if that was the path of least resistance you can bet it went there at a rapid rate.
