Like the Red said, someone took the thermostat out of your M - probably after it stuck closed and overheated the motor. Auto Zone part number 800-180 is a good replacement, and costs less than $4 (the IHC t'stat runs $20 or more...)

Tip: Don't be surprised if the temp gage doesn't show anything even after installing a thermostat. If the gage is more than a few years old there's a good chance it no longer works.
