brake job on a W30

I am getting ready to do a brake job on my W30. I don't know whether it needs only adjsting or whether I will need to replace the band and lining. Has anybody out there ever done this? I could use any advice I could get. I don't even know how to remove the bull gear cover, as the service manual advises. Also, if the band is shot, can replacements be obtained? Thanks guys.
