Magneto trouble farmal A

Hello to everyone i have encounted my first farmal problem for the year my neighbor has just purchased a very tired farmal A he got it for 600 dollars Australian it looks pretty awful at first glanze the bloke who he got it off said he painted it he sure did he did it with a brush and its a red white and black farmal A i thought the best thing would be the engine but as soon as he got it off the trailer it has stoped dead at first i thought it was carby problems (fuel was going into the air cleaner bowl) and gave the carby a well overdue service kit but it still wouldnt start i then checked the timing with no 1 at TDC the rotor points closer to no 3 then 1 (magneto has tripped) is it possible it has jumped a tooth i find it hard to beleive it was running good before it was purchased it has just happened suddnly i have purchased a manuel but it will be a while before i recieve it your thoughts will be much appeciated thanks davey.
