I had a 66 Cub that had a similar conditon; runs full choke but dies unchoked. I discovered that my fuel system had small grass fibres floating around that found their way to the carburator inlet fitting. There was a fine mesh screem at the fuel tube inlet at the carburator. I disconnected the fuel tube and cleaned the debris from the screen. That cured the condition for a while and I had to repeat the process several time before the system cleared itself.
Also for hard starting I learned that a spark plug setting of .023" gap is ideal for my 1950 Cub with magneto ignition.
