Can't answer all your questions but can take a shot some of 'em... 1 - The "12V P/N" says the regulator can be used on either a positive and negative ground system. Some regulators are built polarity-specific by using different materials for the positive and negative halves of contact sets. These are usually clearly marked with the ground polarity. Other regulators (like the one you've got) are constructed with the same metal for both contact halves and thus can be used on either ground polarity. 2 - You're right about the relay with the normally open contacts being the cutout and the other being the voltage/current regulator. 3 - The pitting of the regulator contacts says the regulator has been used (and perhaps mis-used). And since it's not a polarity specific regulator, the contact points are more likely to pit and burn after some usage. 4 - There were some 12 positive ground systems around in the mid-50's. BMC/Nuffield and Ferguson diesels were positive ground. I believe the early 12 volt Oliver and Deere were also. Don't know about Farmall however.
