The proper way to protect your rims is to sandblast, prime and paint them inside and out.

Over the past winter I did this to 6 front and 8 rear rims. It is a lot of work but the rims rust from the inside out and you cannot protect them unless you do it.

If the insides of the rims have been sandblasted you can use glyptol in place of paint to coat them. Glyptol is thicker than paint and will help to cover over the pits.
