Thanks again Hobo. I think I got it now.

My engine is a 51, but the rectangular lift arms and bump in the tranny says those parts, at least, are from 52.

Whatever outer seal I have is leaking pretty good. Part of the problem was an overfull tranny, which I took care of already.

I just went out and looked again - the support plate doesn't show any sign of ever having the round retainer on it - I'll take that to mean that it never had one.
