Posted by Joe in MI on April 13, 2008 at 13:41:41 from (64.68.243.23):

I was working on my brakes today - I need to replace the support plate (the pin is broke off) and the dust shield (broken pin caused cam to rip a wide, jagged hole in it)

I figured since I'm waiting for parts I might as well take the brake cam shaft out so I can strip/prime/paint it properly. I started looseing the nuts and bolts that hold the assembly together and once again, find that someone has been here before and monkeyed things up.

There are 6 bolts that I'm talking about - they correspond to holes in the support plate. The top and bottom holes had hex head bolts, which came from the axle side. They threaded into something inside the assembly, cause there was no nut on the backing plate. The bottom hole has another bolt on the plate side, but it's not threaded into anything - just sitting in the hole.

Three of the other four holes had flat studs in them (with splines under the head) the heads were on the support plate and lock washers and nuts on the axle side. The hole in the 10:00 position had a bolt and nut.

Looking at the NH Parts page, it looks like these are all supposed to be bolts, but it isn't clear in the picture what is supposed to go where.

I really want to post a picture of this mess. I've tried numerous time to upload photos to photobucket, but it never gets further than 0%.

I'm also trying to figure out what seals and gaskets are supposed to be here. There is nothing on top of the support plate other than the hub, and it's leaking grease there. Is there supposed to be another seal here?

Today's Featured Article - Antique Tractors a Passing Fad? - by Tractor Talk Forum Participants. A Talk of the Town article - Do you see antique tractors going out like a fad? Value has come down this winter. An example is the Ford Model A and T cars that went through this in years ago, along with the hit & miss engine. Will the younger generation move on to something else? Will it be harder to sell them and what models will be affected? Could we see the value crash on our rusty relics? ... [Read Article]
