I am replacing the shoes on my 9N and I am wondering about the brake springs. From what I understand the "red" spring goes on the bottom shoe on both sides. My problem is that my springs have no color. One spring is made of a lighter gauge of wire than the other and photos on the web seem to suggest that the "lighter" wire spring is the red one. If this is true my brakes had the springs backwards as this lighter wire gauge spring was on the top shoe on both sides, Brakes never worked worth a hoot since I got this tractor but I always thought it was because of the leaky seals and resulting oil on the brakes. Not sure if the springs installed backwards would have any real effect. I have installed sure seals and discovered that there was no gaskets at all on the side that very wet. Not even any sealer, just steel to steel. No wonder it was wet!
