The charger is the only part that is DC. These are really good welders and are almost destruction pruf. They don't really have a duty cycle like you will read about on newer welders. These box welders were built and designed for rural power supply way back when which brings me to my next line. The best part about them is you can use the 180 amp setting all day and do it on a 30 amp breaker per leg. I have two of these, one has the charger and one doesn't. I bought my first one in 1974 and it was an old welder then. THe local Co-op in Nebraska had started selling Century welders and a farmer traded his in for a new one. About a month later he wanted his old Forney back. I have a soft spot for the old Marquette's to. Bought one at a yard sale here a couple months ago for $50.00. A Forney that works is easy worth $100.
